Pure Mencía from heroic viticulture with amphora ageing within the Ribeira Sacra D.O.

Heroica comes from Ribeira Sacra, a dramatic landscape of steep slopes where viticulture truly challenges gravity. It is made from Mencía vines averaging 25 years of age, planted on traditional stone terraces between 200 and 600 meters above sea level on sandy-loam soils of granitic origin. These terraces (“pataos”) not only make cultivation possible on inclines of up to 80%, but also regulate temperature and protect the soil, promoting balanced ripening under an Atlantic climate with Mediterranean influence. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before fermenting at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then rests for 31 months in stainless steel, is refined for 9 months in a clay amphora, and finally completes a minimum of 24 months of bottle ageing, achieving depth, finesse, and a distinctive expression of Mencía. In the glass, it displays a ruby-red color with carmine hues, clean and bright, with medium intensity. The nose is highly expressive, offering aromas of strawberry and raspberry along with subtle spicy and mineral notes. On the palate, it is balanced, with ripe red fruit, marked minerality, and a long, deep finish that reflects its time in clay amphora. A unique, elegant wine with strong sense of place.

It all began in 1940, when Manuel Méndez and Maruja Otero opened Casa Penouzos in Chantada (Lugo), a wine shop that was then the trigger for a relationship that would be continued years later by Javier Méndez and Ana María Rojo, parents of Juan Luis Méndez Rojo. In this same line, and as a special tribute to his parents and to his beloved land of origin, a project is started which he names and protects with his own surnames: Méndez-Rojo; a project that reflects the trajectory, the years of experience and the knowledge of the sector, offering excellent brands of Galician wines.  

 

We start from the respect and admiration for the environment, seeking to pay tribute to the land and our people. The only project with wines from the 5 Galician designations of origin.
