Mil Ríos Merenzao Barrica comes from Valdeorras, from the slopes of A Portela de Portomourisco (Petín), beneath the Galician mountains and under a Mediterranean–oceanic climate with clear Atlantic influence. The grapes come from old vines planted in 1950 on clay-iron soils, where Merenzao reveals its personality with freshness, precision, and mineral character. Hand-harvested and carefully vinified, the wine ferments in open barrels with regular punch-downs to gently extract color and nuance while preserving the purity of the fruit. It is then aged for 9 months in used French oak barrels, followed by 10 months in bottle, which brings breadth, structure, and aromatic complexity while maintaining the vibrancy of the variety. In the glass, it shows an appealing cherry color with ruby highlights and good tear. The nose is enveloping, with notes of violets, balsamic hints, and ripe red and black fruits. On the palate, it is flavorful and complex: light on entry yet broad in its development, with excellent acidity balanced by ripe, polished tannins and a persistent, elegant finish. A balanced, expressive, and highly food-friendly wine.

It all began in 1940, when Manuel Méndez and Maruja Otero opened Casa Penouzos in Chantada (Lugo), a wine shop that was then the trigger for a relationship that would be continued years later by Javier Méndez and Ana María Rojo, parents of Juan Luis Méndez Rojo. In this same line, and as a special tribute to his parents and to his beloved land of origin, a project is started which he names and protects with his own surnames: Méndez-Rojo; a project that reflects the trajectory, the years of experience and the knowledge of the sector, offering excellent brands of Galician wines.  

 

We start from the respect and admiration for the environment, seeking to pay tribute to the land and our people. The only project with wines from the 5 Galician designations of origin.
