Made from the Mencía variety within the Valdeorras D.O.

Mil Ríos Mencía Barrica comes from Valdeorras, in the heart of Galicia, shaped by a Mediterranean–oceanic climate with strong Atlantic influence. The grapes come from selected parcels in O Bolo, Larouco, Petín, and Vilamartín de Valdeorras, from vineyards averaging around 40 years of age, located between 250 and 500 meters above sea level on slate and clay-iron soils that lend freshness, tension, and mineral character. Made primarily from Mencía (93%) with a small proportion of Garnacha Tintorera (7%), the grapes undergo a gentle cold maceration after hand-harvesting. Following an initial stage in stainless steel, the wine is transferred to 225-liter barrels of French (53%) and American (47%) oak, where it rests for 5 months, achieving subtle integration of wood while preserving the varietal expression. In the glass, it displays a deep cherry color with ruby rim and medium-high intensity. The nose is ripe and expressive, with aromas of mature red fruits, balsamic and mineral notes, complemented by light toasted nuances, liquorice, and toffee from the oak. On the palate, it is flavorful and well-structured, with velvety tannins, good body, and a long, persistent finish where fruit and ageing are perfectly balanced. An expressive, elegant, and highly food-friendly red wine.

It all began in 1940, when Manuel Méndez and Maruja Otero opened Casa Penouzos in Chantada (Lugo), a wine shop that was then the trigger for a relationship that would be continued years later by Javier Méndez and Ana María Rojo, parents of Juan Luis Méndez Rojo. In this same line, and as a special tribute to his parents and to his beloved land of origin, a project is started which he names and protects with his own surnames: Méndez-Rojo; a project that reflects the trajectory, the years of experience and the knowledge of the sector, offering excellent brands of Galician wines.  

 

We start from the respect and admiration for the environment, seeking to pay tribute to the land and our people. The only project with wines from the 5 Galician designations of origin.
