VR Barrica comes from Ribeira Sacra, a dramatic landscape of steep slopes where heroic viticulture shapes a unique mosaic of granite and slate terraces overlooking the Sil and Miño river canyons. The vineyards lie between 200 and 600 meters above sea level, planted on traditional stone terraces (“pataos”) that regulate temperature, protect the soil, and favor balanced ripening under an Atlantic climate with Mediterranean influence. The sandy-loam soils of granitic origin contribute finesse, tension, and mineral character. Made 100% from Mencía, the wine is produced from hand-harvested grapes carefully selected at optimal ripeness. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in tanks at controlled temperature (22–24 ºC), followed by a maceration on the skins to build color, structure, and complexity. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and refine its texture. The wine is aged for 26 months in French oak barrels, gaining depth, harmony, and elegance, and rests briefly in bottle before release. In the glass, it shows an intense picota-cherry red color with pinkish rims, clean and bright, reflecting its noble oak ageing. The nose reveals red fruit aromas, balsamic hints, and subtle spicy notes from well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is well-structured and full-bodied, with a long, persistent finish recalling ripe red fruit and spice. A serious, expressive red with a strong Atlantic identity.

It all began in 1940, when Manuel Méndez and Maruja Otero opened Casa Penouzos in Chantada (Lugo), a wine shop that was then the trigger for a relationship that would be continued years later by Javier Méndez and Ana María Rojo, parents of Juan Luis Méndez Rojo. In this same line, and as a special tribute to his parents and to his beloved land of origin, a project is started which he names and protects with his own surnames: Méndez-Rojo; a project that reflects the trajectory, the years of experience and the knowledge of the sector, offering excellent brands of Galician wines.  

 

We start from the respect and admiration for the environment, seeking to pay tribute to the land and our people. The only project with wines from the 5 Galician designations of origin.
