The Spanish Gourmet Pizza Championship celebrated its fifth edition with Jesús Marquina together with the AEPA (Spanish Association of Artisan Pizza Makers) and Grupo Gourmets. Jesús Marquina, known as “Il Dottore Marquinetti,” five-time world champion, has been the master of ceremonies for the championship, which featured masterclasses, acrobatic exhibitions, and a competition in all 10 categories: classic, pala, taglio, Neapolitan (classic and contemporary), gluten-free, più larga, Argentine, speed, and acrobatics.
Among the new features of the last edition was the selection of the Best Pizza Maker in Spain from among all the contestants who entered at least four categories of the competition. In addition to recognition and a trophy, the winner received a cash prize of €1,000.
One of the new features this year was the Team Triathlon category. All groups of three participants who have collectively registered in at least three categories from among the following are eligible for this category: Contemporary Pizza, Classic Pizza, Pizza Pala, Pizza Taglio or Gluten Free Pizza. The winners of this category were the team champions and received a cash prize of €500.
Another new feature and change to the rules is that in the Argentine Pizza category, participants could present the judging panel with two different pizzas of their choice: the Argentine muzzarella pizza or the free-style fugazzeta.
Negrini/Robo, the leading importer and distributor of Italian food and wine, provided its tomatoes exclusively for the pizza bases; 5 Stagioni, a leading producer of high-quality flour, provided contestants with its wide variety of wheat flours for those who make their dough on site; and the dairy company Albe provided its mozzarella for the championship.
