ELEGANCE FROM OUR HIGH-ALTITUDE VINEYARD
Viña Magna Crianza 2020 is the most elegant expression of our vineyard. The steeper slopes of our high-altitude vineyard and the temperature contrasts on our estate repay us with the personality and elegance of this unusual wine, full of subtle touches. Our varied soils, ranging from chalk, sandstone, and gravel to more clayey areas, give us a special complexity which, together with our knowledge of sustainable vine-growing at the highest altitudes (960 m), results in a fresh, intense, elegant wine: a reflection of this unique landscape. Several varieties from the estate were used to make Vina Magna Crianza 2020: Tinto Fino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The result is an expressive wine - full-bodied yet fresh and vibrant.
2021 VINE CYCLE
The vineyard went into its winter rest early, as the leaves fell at the end of October. The very cold winter in January and the spring with its abundant rainfall led to good accumulation of wood reserves. The summer was very hot in July, with highs close to 40º. At the end of the ripening period, in September, the nights were cool, increasing the thermal gradient and encouraging the production and ripening of polyphenols. Mild temperatures in September extended ripening until early October, with very favourable conditions for harvesting perfectly healthy fruit.
WINE-MAKING
The grapes were picked by hand into 14 kg boxes and the bunches were individually selected on a table on entering the winery. We work using gravity to respect the fruit as far as possible, skins are kept intact without crushing, and the juice is extracted through the natural pressure of the berries. The tanks are made inert to prevent oxidation processes. Cold pre-maceration and hot post-maceration were carried out to maintain primary and secondary aromas. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation was performed with native yeasts at controlled temperatures (max. 30ºC). The wine was subsequently aged in French and American oak barrels for 14.5 months, with daily humidity and temperature checks.
TASTING NOTES
The wine is opaque and garnet red in colour, with a ruby rim. It is very dense, with a glycerine texture giving it character and personality. On the nose, it shows the highest levels of purity and intensity. In a still glass, there are notes of black fruit dominated by blackberry and blackcurrant, accompanied by lactic notes. When the glass is moved, well-assembled hints of coffee appear, with subtle toasting. At the end of the nose, come balsamic notes and spices. The wine is rounded, with a silky mouthfeel due to its sweet tannins and well-balanced acidity giving it a pleasant feeling of freshness. Although woody notes are present, they are not predominant, marking the elegance of this ageing process. Spices and toffee return in the midpalate to recall the wine’s period in the barrel. There is a long, intense aftertaste of ripe black fruit, with light mineral notes typical of high-altitude vineyards.
