OUR YOUNGEST, MOST VIBRANT HIGH-ALTITUDE WINE
Our youngest, most vibrant high-altitude wine. Dominio Basconcillos Finca de Altura, made from selected grapes grown on vines 940 metres above sea level, is one of the best-known in its class in Ribera del Duero. This high-altitude wine is marked by raspberry and strawberry fruit, with hints of mineral, a rich texture and a sweet vanilla finish. Balanced acidity and freshness offer a rounded mouthfeel, soft tannins and a long finish. The nose is spicy, with floral, violet notes and fresh red fruit. This new expression of Tempranillo at its most generous is a modern, easy-drinking wine.
2023 VINTAGE
The vines accumulated plenty of reserves, as they kept their leaves for a long time. Leaf fall lasted well into November. The winter was very cold in January and February, and there was plenty of rain in the spring. A very hot summer was punctuated by several heatwaves. During the ripening period, in September, the nights were cool, widening the thermal range and encouraging the production and maturing of polyphenols. The high September temperatures extended ripening until the beginning of October, with ideal conditions for harvesting perfectly healthy fruit.
WINEMAKING
The grapes were harvested by hand in 12 kg boxes and the bunches were selected at the table as they arrived at the winery. The greatest respect was given to the fruit, working with gravity to keep the properties of the grape intact and prevent oxidisation processes. Cold pre-maceration and hot post-maceration were carried out to maintain primary and secondary aromas. Alcoholic fermentation was spontaneous with native yeasts at controlled temperatures. The wine was later aged in French and American oak barrels for eight months, with daily humidity and temperature checks.
TASTING NOTES
A bright ruby-coloured red wine with a purple rim, a sign of youth. Highly focused and very intense on the nose:mainly freshly picked red fruits with touches of yogurt. Rounded, but lively and tense. In the mouth, the attack is smooth thanks to the well-integrated tannins. The wine has a marked but balanced acidity, giving a pleasant sensation of freshness. Spices and light toasted touches complete the aromatic profile. There is a long, intense aftertaste of fresh strawberries and raspberries and light mineral and eucalyptus notes typical of high-altitude vineyards.
