This wine unites two Andalusian wine regions par excellence: Montilla-Moriles, and Malaga. Tempranillo and Merlot come from the Moriles Altos, a region with high quality limestone albariza soils. Vines are cultivated in shallow pits and short-pruned. The rare indigenous grape Romé comes from Malaga’s Axarquía, where these old vines are found on slate soils dotted with white quartz at an altitude of 500-850m, within a few kilometres of the Mediterranean sea. Each variety ferment separately and the final blend being decided just before the wine goes into the barrel. Matured in French oak barrels of various ages for 12 months.
Bodegas Bentomiz is the adventure of a Dutch couple, fascinated by the history, soils and climate of Malaga's Axarquía. Its magnificent 'Bauhaus' style building is located in the steep foothills of the Sierra Tejada but with views of the Mediterranean; a location that enjoys a mild climate, some rain in the winters and long dry summers when the heat is softened by the sea breezes. These excellent conditions allow the vines – especially the white Muscat of Alexandria and the red Romé – to thrive. The high up old vineyards (80-100 years) produce high quality grapes, which are subtly influenced by the minerality of poor slate soils and salty sea breezes. The name of the delicate and personal “Ariyanas” wines comes from an ancient Muslim hamlet and means “fragrant, aromatic”.
