Canned food was created at the beginning of the 19th century when Napoleon's forces had to face a great food shortage. In 1800, Napoleon Bonaparte offered a reward of 12,000 francs to whom he could design a practical method to conserve food and that these could be consumed by the mobilized army; It is said that he himself affirmed that "an army is marching to the rhythm of its stomach." After years of experimentation, Nicolas Appert presented his invention, which consisted of preserving sealed food in glass jars that were boiled later, and thus won the reward in 1810. The following year, Appert published L´Art de conserver les substances animal et végétales (The Art of Conserving Animal and Vegetable Substances), which was the first cookbook of this type on modern methods of food preservation. Also in 1810, the Englishman Peter Durand applied the Appert processes using different glass, ceramic, tin or other metal containers and obtained the first canning patent for King George III. This can be considered the origin of modern canned food.
OUR HISTORY
Industrias Alimenticias de Suflí, SL. Born in 1985 in the Alto Almanzora region (Almería), in the town of Suflí. This company and its founders (Antonio Serrano and Mª del Pilar Jiménez) decide to put in value and make known the artisan preserves that for so many years the people of the place had elaborated for their consumption with the vegetables that they cultivated at the edge of the Almanzora river, watered by its waters under the summer sun. Joining efforts, with newly built facilities and the essential workforce of women and men of the region, they embarked on this adventure of manufacturing, marketing and publicizing the “Suflí Salad” in an organized way but with the same precept of elaboration that their own workers had been in their homes for several generations.
HANDCRAFTED TRADITION
Our first objective, and the philosophy of this company, has always been to elaborate with vegetables and fruits of the earth in a totally handmade way following the traditional ways of our parents and grandparents. The vegetables are still from our land, the machines used have heart and peppers, tomatoes, onions, eggplants, etc. They are roasted, cooked and packaged by hand. We use the "Mary Bath" to preserve our products without the ingredients losing quality and flavor and, most importantly, without any additives, only the rich vegetables. There are no preservatives, no dyes, no acidulants, nothing. This allows us to offer a product that is one hundred percent natural, since it is only vegetable or fruit, and artisan because of its way of elaboration. After 30 years and the endorsement of our most emblematic product, "The Suflí Salad", we manufacture a wide range of canned and natural preserves, as well as some homemade jams worthy of being tasted.
