The extra virgin olive oil protected by the Designation of Origin Poniente de Granada is a natural product obtained from the fruit of the many varieties of olive trees (Olea europea, L.) existing in the district, including: Hojiblanca, Picual, Picudo, Lucio or illoreño, Nevadillo de Alhama de Granada, Loaime, Chorreao de Montefrío, Gordal de Granada, Manzanilla de Montefrío, Guitoso, Verdal, Azul and Alameño.The main varieties found in the area are: Hojiblanca (40% of the trees), Picual (30%), Picudo (15%) and Lucio (10%). Of the remaining varieties, most are considered to be native, representing less than 5% of the total area devoted to olive groves, although they add a great deal of personality to the oils, as this population is very representative locally in many municipalities.
