The next edition of the Sommelier Championship will mark a quarter of a century of the competition. The aim of the contest is to promote sommelier culture as well as to select the best sommelier who will represent Spain in the world championship. It is divided into two phases: the semi-final and the final. The semi-final consists in an exam with questions or a multiple-choice test and a written tasting of wine or spirits, with the top three scorers going through to the final.
The final consists in a quick test, an oral wine tasting, an incorrect menu, identification of spirits, liqueurs and drinks and finally the decanting and serving of a bottle of wine in front of the jury. The contestant must take into account that there may be a surprise test, based on any of the skills associated with the profession of Sommelier.
The correct consistency and style used by the contestant during all the tests is also valued.
At the last edition, the title of Best Sommelier of Spain 2018 was awarded to:
- Jon Andoni Rementería from Remenetxe restaurant, Basque Country.
